Maskostume of the Unrecyclable
The Balinese dance of the Barong and Rangda inspires the design for the Maskostume of the Unrecyclable. This symbolic performance, representing the eternal battle between good and evil, is used as a means to cleanse a community of harmful forces.
The materials used in the creation of masks also inspire this Maskostume design. Mask traditions around the world use regional natural resources because of their abundance and availability. Commonly used are shells, animal hair, and wood. Natural materials are also valued as living objects with a spirit or symbolic meaning of their own; lending power to the mask.
The materials used to create Maskostumes reflect the abundant resources of our urban region, that being trash. In addition, Rangda was a physical representation of an unwanted element of the Balinese culture, by using trash to construct our Maskostume we are not only reinforcing the idea that these are unwanted items but also that we, as a culture, strive towards the reduction of trash.
